Make potty training your dog easier

Potty training your dog is simple however, it does take some diligence and management on the part of the owner. If you follow these steps for 2 to 3 weeks, you should see a lot of success.

The one thing you want to eliminate when doing potty training is having the dog sneak off and have an accident without you catching them doing it. Here are our proven steps to solve potty training:

Four easy steps to ensure success with potty training!

Step One:

Use a crate!

Keeping your dog in a crate when unsupervised is key to preventing indoor accidents.
Ensure that the crate is only big enough for the dog to stand up, turn around and lay down to prevent the dog from having accidents in one part of the crate and laying in another part of the crate.
Every time you let the dog out of the crate no matter how long it is in there immediately take it out to potty so it learns that when the crate door opens it has a chance to go outside and succeed.

Step Two:

Utilize the dog leash

While working on potty training, your dog should be on a leash, even indoors and with you.
Your dog should not have unrestricted access to your home to help prevent accidents.
For the dog’s safety, you should ensure that the leash is removed when the dog is put in his or her crate.
Make sure to take your dog out first thing in the morning, after every meal, after a nap, after any playtime and right before bed.

Step Three:

Be firm!

Tone of voice is very important when training your dog.
When you catch your dog having an accident in the home, grab the dog while it’s going and take it outside.
Wait outside until it potties again and then immediately praise. This will help it associate praise with going outside.
You can always clean up the mess after the fact. Timing is important. Your dog needs to quickly understand the action you are displeased with (urinating or defecating inside) and what the proper action is (going outside).

Step Four:

Praise good behavior

Every time you take your dog outside to potty and it actually does potty, immediately throw a party for them with treats, praise and affection.
You want to do this immediately after they go and not after you come inside because then you are just rewarding the dog for coming inside.
Do not leave the dog unattended outside in a fenced in yard or invisible fence type situation because then you will not be there to reward the dog for doing its business outside.
If the dog does not do anything outside, then keep it on the leash with you in the house and be ready to grab them up when they start to go inside, refer to step 3.
